Accessibility - Making Apps Accessible

Accessibility is a very important item that needs to be considered when designing anything that will have many users, as you need to consider people with all kinds of disabilities which can include from hearing impairments to blindness, and other things as not being able to read or even not understanding the language.

The five senses are often considered when designing applications although it's very hard to apply taste and smell when designing applications, it's a lot easier to apply touch, hear and see to an application. Say for an example someone is partially blind and cannot read most of what is written, the application could have a button that allows the in built speaker to read out what is written on the screen.

Another example would be someone that has a hearing impairment so cannot hear a video or perhaps an audio file, in that case the application could either have subtitles for the video or perhaps have a written monologue of the audio file.
